I…gotta…tellya…I’m really disappointed. I was excited to try this soap as it had so many great reviews. I read a lot of them and they all said the stuff was great. Smelled good, worked good, and the manufacturer has great service. HOWEVER, the reviews about it not lasting are absolutely true. I paid $10 for a bar of this stuff off here and when it came in, I verified that it smells great, does a great job cleaning, and leaves your skin feeling clean and smooth. But, to my sadness (I really love this soap), this bar of soap does not last long at all. Certainly not “$10 for a single bar” long. The size of the bar is about the thickness of two iPhones stacked on top of each other and about as big as half an iPhone 6 plus. I’ve used it for about a week and a half and take one shower a day. The size of the soap this morning was about the size of a quarter (after wadding up the remnants into a ball so that I could get every cent’s worth of use out of it). This stuff is really great in all ways except how long it lasts. I wish the bar was about twice as big and was a little more dense, but, for $10 or even $7ish off their website, it’s just flat not worth it. I won’t buy it again and the reviews about it not lasting are 100% true. I thought those people were just clean freaks and took hour long showers three times a day. I am not one of those people and it really really didn’t last more than a week and a half. I don’t often write reviews on here, but, this one was such a bummer, I felt that I needed to add to the list of review. So, if you have money to burn and don’t care that that an entire bar of soap only lasts a week and a half, this stuff is friggen awesome. But, if you don’t want to spend $20-30 a month on bars of soap, stay away. Picture below is after 10 days of use.

I bought this after reading so many great reviews on this soap. I’ll admit I was slightly skeptical that some reviews mentioned it lasted longer. I take one shower a day and it is gone in about two weeks. I do like the smell but can’t say I’m blown away as some reviews also mention. Lastly, on a positive note, I do like the exfoliating grains of sand in the soap that help to exfoliate…one of my favorite features.

Overall, I should have gone with my gut, but I was willing to give it a try. Maybe I’ll try another scent however at almost $10 per bar it’s hard to justify for anyone on a modest budget.

Really guys? Do I want to wake up in the morning and have my first task be to negotiate the woodchips in my soap? I don’t care how hipster and cool you are nobody wants this. Also it smells fine but it’s nothing to write home about.

I bought just to try out. It’s good but not great, won’t be buying again.

    Pros. Smells good, lathers good.

Cons. Biggest disappointment was the pine tar, I’ve had real pine tar soap before and there is little to no pine tar in this. Scent(cedar?) was nice but weak, could have been a bit stronger. A little on the pricey side for artisan soap.

I’ll admit this soap is way better than any commercial brand of soap (most artisan soaps are) and is only reason I’m giving 3 stars, but this soap just isn’t worth it, I’ve had better for less.

This really is excellent soap. I was a soapscriber for a while but have canceled my subscription. Not because I didn’t love the products – they were fantastic! But I’m now making my own soap, inspired by Dr. Squatch. I ordered this Pine Tar soap from Amazon so I could test it (from Amazon instead of direct from Squatch) and write a verified review.
There are some negative reviews for this and I’ll address those points here.

First, this is COLD PROCESS soap! You 100% cannot treat this like the soap you buy at the store, it’s totally different. This soap is going to be much softer and you need to keep it out of the water as much as possible. If you leave this somewhere where water is constantly hitting it, it’s going to melt away and you are going to be a sad panda. This is not unique to Dr. Squatch soap, it’s something that most any cold process soap will do. Keep the soap high, dry and happy folks.

The scent of the pine tar soap from Amazon was really strong when I opened the package. It does have a Pine Sol smell to it. Out of the Amazon packaging this dissipates a lot. The scent of the soap does not really stay on my skin like the other soaps Squatch produces. This is probably because there is little to no essential oil or fragrance oil in the soap. The list of ingredients is different on the website and my packaging. On the soap I received there were no essential or fragrance oils listed, that’s not the case on the website. The other soaps I have used from Squatch definitely leave a scent on me for the next 3-4 hours, this was not the case with this bar of Pine Tar soap. This is probably because there are no essential/fragrance oils and the amount of pine tar in the soap is really minimal. You may or may not like the smell, just know that out of the Amazon box it’s going to be much stronger than normal.

The Pine Tar soap has sand and oatmeal in it for exfoliation. I read a review here that said there are wood chips. That’s insane. Oatmeal and sand. I didn’t find those harsh at all. I don’t have any skin conditions but the soap has my skin smooth and soft.

With all Squatch soap, I use fishing line to cut each bar into 4 pieces before I use it. I find that the scent fades after about a week of use. This has been the case with all of the soaps I have used from Squatch. I suspect it’s just water absorbing into the soap and bringing the oils closer to the surface. As this repeats, more and more oils are drawn to the surface of the soap and when you get below a certain point there are no more. Cutting the bars up prevents me from using unscented soap for weeks on end as 1/4 of a bar of soap will last me almost 2 weeks.

When I shower, I use a brush and lather that up with my soap chunk (a brush like this one: MAGGIFT Removable Natural Boar Bristle Long Handle Body Brush For Dry Skin Brushing, Remove Dead Skin And Toxins, Scrub And Exfoliation Shower Brush Massage Scrubber. Dry Skin Body Brush, 16 inch).

I keep the soap out of the stream of water at all times. After I’ve lathered up the brush several times (and all of me) I take the soap chunk and lather up again using the soap on my skin instead of the brush. When I’m finished showering I put the soap on a rubber coated wire shower caddy that sits behind my shower heads. It is completely and totally out of any streams of water. With this particular chunk of soap I was able to get 13 showers (out of 1/4 of the bar). So the entire bar would make it to 50 showers for me. I create a lot of later and basically lather myself twice each time I shower. I don’t use the soap lightly at all!

A few more points. This soap has a very small amount of pine tar in it. There are soap recipes that have up to 20% pine tar in the soap. The amount in this soap is nowhere near that, it’s for sure less than 5% of the soap based on the list of ingredients and probably 1-2%. If you are trying to clear up a skin condition you might shop elsewhere or look into making your own. The ingredients on my box do not match the website. Either something is inaccurate or the formula has changed. I suspect that if the formula has changed to what is listed on the website now, the scent of the soap would last outside the shower. Keep in mind that soap is a wash off product and it’s not going to get you smelling the same as if you douse yourself in Axe spray or something. If you want to smell like the forest all day, maybe grab some cedar essential oil.

The pictures I attached to this review…the first one is out of the box. The second one is after 7 showers and the final one is after 11 showers. I got 13 showers out the the chunk. By the end their was scent left in the chunk but it was not as strong as it was at first. I’ll repeat, I kept the chunk of soap out of the stream of water AT ALL TIMES. Do not buy this or any cold process soap if you’re going to just keep it where water is always hitting it. You’d be better off just taking your money ($10 in this case) and setting it on fire. Keep the soap out of the water.

To summarize, this is excellent soap! Keep it out of the steam of water and it’s going to last you a while. You may or may not like the smell. If you’re unsure, smell some diluted Pine Sol…that’s pretty close. There isn’t much actual pine tar in the soap, so if you’re looking to alleviate a skin condition you might want to look into another brand that has more pine tar in it. I’ve been very happy with all of Dr. Squatch’s soaps. Before I tried them showering was kind of whatever – just something I did. But since I’ve used Squatch soaps I actually look forward to showering, it’s very enjoyable. I love the difference it’s made with how my skin feels and my wife really likes the scents. IF you treat the soap right, it will last. To me, it’s a no brainer – definitely worth a little extra cost for a high quality soap!

I bought two bars of this nautical sage soap. I purchased one about two months ago and one last week. The first bar I bought looked like it had spices and all kinds of ingredients in a tan color bar. The second bar which smelled nothing like the first one was almost white in color. It looks like they’re cutting corners trying to make a mass production version. The second bar smelled like dove with chemical ingredients kind of like the first bar that I bought. The second bar was enough to send me over the edge in never wanting to buy this product again. It’s sad that this company that seemed to grab everyone’s attention is trying to do the same Garbage all the other big soap companies are doing.

It’s okay. The bar when delivered smelled strong. However I found after washing myself with the bar the smell wasn’t nearly as noticeable. It’s okay at exfoliating, some parts of the bar have lots of grit some parts have none. Soap lathers well. The bar is supposed to last at least 2 weeks depending how often you wash. I see that being fairly accurate. I ordered this soap off of amazon because after using Dr Squatchs website I found my order to be ridiculously over priced due to shipping. However I find amazons prices to be just as over priced. 1 bar costs $7 on the Dr Squatch website and on here costs $13.45 plus $5.19 in shipping. For a total of $18.64 for 1 Bar of soap…. not worth the money at all! These prices need to adjusted!

Gold Moss 4/5: loved the smell and the soap itself. Didn’t leave me feeling dry and I like knowing that i’m using a natural soap without a bunch of chemicals. It gets a 4/5 because of the square shape and hard corners. After two or so weeks that goes away but I don’t like jabbing myself with non-rounded corners. I will be buying more of these!!

Pine Tar 2/5: The only thing I like is the smell. I should have taken the name more seriously, the soap is black and leaves a black residue which is offputing. The soap is very abrasive and has bits of actual wood in it which I do not like at all!! I fell like i’m going to get a splinter every time I use it.

I have yet to try the cedar citrus bar because the other two bars smelled better. I may update after trying it.

    So the positives:

    – Smells wonderful
    – Makes a nice thick lather
    – Leaves you clean, as a good soap does

    The negatives:

    – Not a viable treatment for skin disorders. Don’t believe the claims. If this was a valid treatment, actual dermatologists would use it. This won’t really do much for any acne, dandruff. Save your money if that’s what you’re looking for.
    – The Price. Holy Moley.
    – The smell does not linger or last, so it’s really just for you while you’re washing up. Anyone else would have to get really close to notice, and you yourself won’t notice it anymore within a few minutes of leaving the shower.
    – Needs to be protected from the elements and kept away from moisture. I cut the bar in quarters and used one piece at a time. If you don’t keep it in a watertight dish away from humidity (a sealed soap dish), it’ll turn to goop and be very hard to use.
    – It takes about 1/4 the time to go through a bar as normal soap. Even keeping it sealed and out of water, this stuff just foams away to nothing in no time at all.

This has bits of wood and grit in it that scratch the skin quite a bit and doesn’t make for a pleasant shower. The scent is pretty good but it doesn’t last after you get out of the shower. Also, the bar deteriorated after one week of showering once a day and it was kept in a dry spot. Lastly it made a big black mess on the surface where it was kept. Obviously not hard to clean up being that it’s soap and all, but still if you care about keeping things presentable that might be a turn off for you.

All in all it’s too expensive for what you get. I wouldn’t buy this soap again.
