This is 5 stars because the product is very useful, soft for reptiles if that’s what your using it for, keeps the ground moist and the air humidity level for the most part, and is overall a very functional and natural look in a terrarium. However I would 100% NOT recommend this for ball pythons, or any other snake for that matter because the first time I fed my snake in her new enclosure using this substrate, she missed her food and ended up choking on a piece of this- I had to use tweezers to get it out of her mouth which was probably extremely stressful and terrible that I had to remove her from her tank while eating. Great for reptiles that wouldn’t mistake this for food though!

I use this as potting medium and also as substrate for my tortoise enclosure. It expands a LOT and goes a long way. I found a couple of tiny pieces of plastic in it which are a bit concerning if I hadn’t noticed and my tortoise had taken an interest in eating some. Hatchling redfoot loves to burrow into it and does so easily. This is way cheaper than the alternatives I’ve seen for sale.

Fast shipping will buy again. Love it! I use with mixed with fine coco fiber. Love the chunky ness of it will buy again for sure! Easy to clean up too. And looks great. I used about 20% of the huge bag in my 40 gallon enclosure

I have been using this for years for my ball pythons. The last one I ordered though was more husk shreds than chunks.

I thought that I was going to hate this substrate.. but turns out my ball python loves it. For holding the best humidity I find that reptile bark works really well. So compared to that it’s not quite as good.. but it’s not awful. If I give it a good spray in the morning and the humidity spikes to 99 or so then it’ll hold until the next day and at its lowest will get to about 60 on the ground and 40 in the air (my ball likes 70).

Also, when you look up information about ball pythons it makes them sound so boring. But my little guy started burrowing in this substrate.. which he’s never done before! It’s so cute so I have to continue to buy the substrate, and mix it with reptibark to make it stretch. Even though it’s a 7.2 quart bag a little does not go a long way.

The only substrate I will use. We adopted a baby ball python back in August, and after trying a few different substrates and always it was a battle to get the humidity up, and keep it up. Then I tried this. I soaked the brick for about an hour in a bucket of warm water, then broke it apart and put it in the 10 gallon enclosure. This gave about 3 inches easily. Not only has the struggle been a bit easier with humidity and temp, but Mr. Snakey Snake evidently LOVES it. The first morning I went to check on him before work, I couldn’t find him. I know he hadn’t gotten out, the lid was still securely locked in place. He wasn’t in either hide or his humidity box. I eventually found him curled up snug, all the way in the bottom. Now he has tunnels all over the tank leading to different little burrows.

This is working well as a potting material for my orchids. Not necessarily a criticism of the product, but two things to be aware of if you are using them for this purpose:
    1. The husk leeches a red color when watered, which might stain whatever you have below your plant.
    2. The side of the husk fragments is small enough to fall through the bottom of some vanda baskets. You can fix this problem by stuffing the bottom of the basket with some thin patches of coconut coir liner as can be had cheaply on Amazon or your local Home Depot, Lowes, nursery, etc.

I’ve owned snakes for years and bedding has always been Aspen. The great thing about this coconut bark is that it really holds moisture while being dry on top. It’s an ideal bedding resource for tropical snakes.
