This is one instance when I should have heeded the one star reviews. I read the instructions. I hooked the HDMI cable and power cord to their respective receptacles. After pressing the power key and wondering whether the unit had powered up (there is no light or other indication that it had) I hit the open/close button (tray opened) inserted a DVD and closed the tray. After close to a minute the ‘Loading’ sign showed on the screen. I waited (and waited) for quite a while for the movie to start and finally decided to hit ‘Play’, thinking that might be the answer to being able to watch the movie. Eventually the movie started. Yes! Got through about five minutes and the movie stopped playing. Now, if you reread all I’ve written thus far you’ll know how I spent close to the next half hour, before reboxing this thing and requesting a return.

So far, so good with this refurbished DVD player. It’s just day one, so hopefully I’ll get years of use out of it. Minor scuffing on the front (see photos), but it’s not very noticeable and it’ll ultimatey go in a cabinet. It shipped in its original packaging. FYI: Batteries were not included in my order.

I recently updated all of my movies to DVD so I no longer needed VCR/DVD player and didn’t want to spend a lot for a DVD player I am very happy with this product slim and compact to fit nicely in my fireplace tv stand. Will buy another for our other TV in the bedroom

This is a basic DVD player with HDMI output capability. Build quality is about what you’d expect for the price point. Image quality is high.
What amazed me was the archaic user interface. I’m fairly adept at working through various user interfaces of electronic devices, and admit that I had to consult the reference guide to figure some things out. The user interface is of the type found on first generation DVD products 20+ years ago.
That said, there are few DVD-only players left (most also do Bluray). This was for my senior parents, who had no need for Bluray, and therefore I didn’t see the need to pay the extra $$$ on a Bluray player they wouldn’t use the features of. The first DVD player I bought them was from a local drug store, and it lasted all of three or four months of very infrequent use before breaking.
Hopefully we’ll get more mileage out of this one. I bought this one because it included the HDMI cable. The fact that it was renewed didn’t matter — for all practical purposes it was brand new (maybe a few scuffs on the front plate if I squint and try to find them). I took perhaps undeserved comfort in the fact that it’s a name brand I’ve heard of, Sony, as opposed to an off brand, though I imagine they’re all probably made in the same place.

I bought one of these for my brother who needed a DVD. I looked at the new in the box version fo $90.00 then found this refurbished one. When it came and I opened the box it was wrapped like a new unit. Most parts where never opened. Someone must have bought this and Didn’t know it was for HDMI and returned it. So for $38.00 I get a pretty much new unit? Amazing, So I’m buying a few more for others and myself.

Have never bought refurbished before and was a little unsure but it looks great and works great, so easy to hook up.

Tragic! This purchase was a disaster. The remote did not work. The buttons on top of the actual DVD player worked, but you had to press really hard on them. There is only play stop and open/close on the top of the device. With the remote not working, it would have been nice to press the buttons on the player instead. I could not play my dvd because I could not make a selection on the screen.

Just as described. Looks close to new and worked flawlessly. Includes everything you need to run off and including HDMI cable. You will need RCA cables if you are hooking up a sound system. Good value.
Suggestions:
Better Instructions; they are a little muddled but it is not a complicated system.
Including AA batteries would have been a nice touch.
